Those who know me know I am a pretty massive Super Smash Brothers Melee fan. I hate the first game because everyone played it way more than me so when we did free for all's I was always destroyed and never really enjoyed it. The newer games were much of the same, and I never could figure out the flow of the game. The Gamecube version is the most sold for the Gamecube console (7.09 million copies) and is one of the highest regarded. The game can be sold now for typically around $75 but I have seen it go for north of $100. This game has consumed many hours of gameplay for me and my friends and this is a list of my favorite/best 10 characters to play as. 10. Falco The slower, yet more acrobatic, version of Fox. Falco is one of the characters I rarely played as since he was one of the most chosen from my group of friends as a kid. My limited exposure allowed me to see the effectiveness of Falco from up close or far away. His gun is slower than Fox's but deals more damage and provides a little kick back. Overall he is a very common and effective character, one that is fun to play and has a very quick style. Look-wise, Falco looks awesome and looks like he fits in a game of dueling characters. 9. Mario Mario is one of those characters that doesn't seem to get enough use, while he is by far the most recognizable. Mario is a fun character and has a good combination of moves. His yellow blanket (or maybe just really hard piece of cheese) shield is very effective if used correctly. His throw is incredibly powerful but obviously needs to be used when up in the grill of your opponent. He is one I have always enjoyed because nobody liked to be him, and he balances being competitive and having a nostalgia feeling very evenly. 8. Pikachu This little electric rat has been my least favorite character from the first game. Way too overpowered down B and everyone used him/her/it/whatever. Going into the second game I still disliked the character for the exact same reason, he/she/etc. seemed a little too overpowered. Then we all got good at the game and everything balanced itself out. I used Pikachu and realized that Pikachu was actually a fun character to play. I am not good with Pikachu but it's fire power makes it very effective, especially when fighting on Majora's Mask. The only qualm is Pikachu still seems to be used a little too frequently for my taste. 7. Captain Falcon Captain Falcon (I think) is the fastest character in the game. He has one of the most difficult event tasks (racing agains the clock). It is one of those that you play and get incredibly frustrated because you fail so frequently that it really gets to you and can check you out of the game. His moves are incredibly powerful but can be a little bit slower. His side smash doesn't have a very long range but you really don't see many people using it. His side B is incredibly effective if you practice timing it with his punch, or even just side B over and over with good timing to rack up HP damage. 6. Link In the early days I solely relied on using Link. He was my only character I used playing the first Smash Brothers game, and thus I felt he would be the best character to use on the big brother version. I relied heavily on his up B (the sword twirl) and while it was powerful it also proved to be largely ineffective when used by itself. He is a good combination of range (boomerang, bomb and bow) and close combat (sword). His grab is really slow but not bad. His smash is also very good and his down A is incredible if you are good at aiming it. 5. Luigi Luigi seems like the odd step-child. Mario was the one to always get the glory (Mario & Sonic Olympics, Mario World, Super Mario Bros). Luigi never really earned the recognition he deserved for being an equal part in many of the Mario franchise games. In Smash he is relatively unorthodox but if you work with him he can be pretty effective. His side smash is very strong, his missile can save your life if you are quick on the trigger and his green flame ball goes straight rather than dropping off. The largest problem is his up B is very limited in range and doesn't save often. He is very similar to Mario with those subtle differences, but he was always one I connected with more than his brother. 4. Donkey Kong Your stereotypical bruiser. DK is known for being a power hitter, absorbing damage and moving frustratingly slow. Donkey Kong is one of the most powerful in the game (I think it is Ganandorf but am basing that off a guess) and has a cool move set. His wind up punch can be incredible if you are able to load it and store it. His up B is a good way to get back on the map and to cover ground fast, and the down B can be incredible (especially when used against computers in the 20 minute battle royal). One of the game styles we would play was 99 lives with 4 players and if you were DK the goal was to just get a lead. If you had a lead you could grab your opponent and run off the ledge, effectively sacrificing a life of your own but also taking one of your opponents. Last positive, his smashes have really long ranges! The biggest issue is DK's side B, haven't really figured out how to use that effectively. 3. Jigglypuff Jigglypuff is a newcomer to this list. I used to hate Jiggly because I thought all she did was make people sleep and then try to rest them, which never seemed like I was in the right spot so she just took a nap. I recently learned about rollout, good gosh is that a game changer. Jiggly is very floaty and hard to knock out of the arena for good (play on the temple and never die) and her 700 jumps makes her very hard to get rid of. Her smash isn't bad but again it is all about the rollout (it is much more effective in multiplayer games as opponent's focus isn't solely on avoiding you. Still working with her so she isn't one of my best yet but she's still very good and fun to play as. ( I also say she because I have no idea if Jiggly is a she or he). 2. Ice Climbers I just don't understand this one. I LOVE the Ice Climbers. The first time I played this game my friend told me to be anyone but them because they sucked. Naturally I had to play as them and see how bad they truly were. I was horrible with them but kept playing as them and eventually got pretty decent. I have realized that I am not as good with them as I once was but will get back to that place. Their moves are very unorthodox, the fact there are two can confuse an opponent with their targeting. If you get someone in the air their up B is incredibly effective. Their smash attacks are strong and they have a good mixture of range and close combat. Overall truly awesome, and incredibly underutilized (at least from the local games I have played over the years). 1. Fox Fox is a simple one, and it has nothing to do with him being the, voted on, best character in the game. I have always enjoyed fox because he was a faster character and has incredibly good range. Using his gun and whittling down (I guess technically up) damage, his up B and side B are both very far reaching. He has a shield and strong down B, his smash is very strong and looks really cool. Overall he is just a fun character to play and versatile character to learn the game on. He ended up being the melee character I gravitated towards when I first started playing the game and is one I have stuck with and have been consistently alright with (not great because I've never been great).
