When I was in 8th grade my mom decided it was time I started doing my own laundry. Throwing stuff in and picking the settings and then folding it when it was done. I quickly learned it was way easier to put the setting on cold water and neglect separating clothes into colors (I never had enough for a full load of whites anyway). The beginning process is super easy, pick the setting and let the machine do the work. Then you hear that fateful buzz of the dryer. The clothes are done and now you have to fold them...... Folding clothes is the worst chore in the world (especially when you have a lot to fold at the same time). Where do you start? There is probably not enough room to fit everything on your bed when it's folded so you have to do it in sections. BUT you don't want to make multiple trips to the closet or open the same drawer multiple times if you don't have to. I roll my undershirts, so when I think I have them all done I go ahead and put them away so that I have more space on my bed. Without fail, every time there is at least one other undershirt that has found its way to the bottom of the laundry basket and I have to re-open that drawer. Then you have hangers. Grab as many as you can and take them to your bed so that you don't have to keep looking in your closet for more (I have the exact number I need for all my shirts). There always tends to be that one hanger that is missing and I have to go back and search desperately for. Then what do you do when it is on the hanger? Do you lay it on the bed and just lay the shirts on top of each other and hang them all at the same time? I normally just open the top drawer on my dresser and hang them all there and grab them to take over to the closet after. This frees up a little more space on the bed for folding pants or shorts or what not. Then the pairing of socks. This should be a pretty simple task, basically like a game of memory where you can see all the pictures you are trying to match right? WRONG. Some are more worn then others, there are random socks that don't have a match, some are the exact same but randomly longer or shorter (how does that even happen)...... I try to get multiple different pairs so it is easier but I find that now I just have many different odd ball socks that are now paired with other odd ball socks. They are on my feet so who sees them anyway right?
The only benefit of this is that you can put on a tv show or movie and watch while you fold. It allows you to semi-multitask which can be a good thing. But overall this is the worst chore that there is (from an irritating standpoint... I know there are probably significantly worse chores in any disadvantaged area or malnourished community).
