It isn’t an easy fix. Finding a way to remedy the lack of upper card draws for WWE. I recently looked back over 2001 and saw how they built large superstars over the course of the year. The main title saw numerous talents like Austin, Rock, Kurt Angle, HHH, Booker T, Undertaker, Kane, Jericho, Benoit and RVD. These all had huge star potential because they were put on the main stage. There was none of this “so and so isn’t ready to main event” or having feuds last between two individuals for 3 months at a time without outward interference. That said, I am looking to create a build up for a pay per view that I personally think would be a step in the right direction. This is using the immediate talent available (excluding Cena, Orton, Cesaro, Rollins, Kidd, Barrett, etc for injuries or time off). THIS IS A GENERIC PPV. NOT ROYAL RUMBLE, SURVIVOR SERIES, SUMMERSLAM OR MANIA. Throughout the week the New Day is bragging about how they have just defeated the Uso’s and Lucha Dragons. They early defeated the Dudleyz and earned the titles from PTP. Effectively, there are no more challengers that represent a problem for them and they feel they should be rewarded with getting the PPV off. Big Show comes out as a new corporate figure in-charge of RAW (Not superseding HHH or Stephanie, but being directly in-charge of managerial duties). He says that WWE was built on fighting champions and wants to know if the crowd thinks the New Day should get the weekend off or if they should put the titles on the line? The crowd chants something (probably YES YES YES or FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT). The New Day says they are disappointed with Big Show’s decision but know they will be able to fight whatever team Show throws their way. Big Show says “team? Don’t worry, the teams thrown your way will make sure you earn the right to keep those titles” and walks away. The New Day start bouncing words back and forth with each other about how “it’s teams?” “was that plural?” “more than one?” “that’s not fair numbers” etc. Later you have backstage segments between different tag teams that they are going to be trying to compete for the title, but nobody knows what the kind of match will be or the format. The Ascension starts getting nervous that other teams will take a spot they could have and start attacking people back stage (Taking out Epico and Jey and Kalisto all on different occasions). Big Show comes out two weeks before and announces that it will be a tag team tournament where two teams start off, when one is eliminated the next comes out, etc. until the match is over. Furthermore, the teams will compete in beat the clock competitions in the next two weeks (singles competitions) and the faster the time you have the later you get to enter the ring. He says that New Day will get the last slot. The teams competing go through their individual matches to set up who goes where. The Ascension have a rough time and realize they will be in the first group if they don’t get the last group (Lucha Dragons) to have a really poor time. They interfere in the match and cause Sin Cara to have the worst time of all groups. Big Show announces all the team’s times but says that the 3rd to last slot is taken up by another team that were unable to partake in the pre-PPV contest and were randomly slotted there.
The Tag Team Titles match Lucha Dragons vs Dudley Boyz Lucha Dragons vs Ascension Ascension vs PTP Ascension vs Los Matadores (after this match you get the sense the Ascension is rolling and they play it up to the crowd). Lights go out and the surprise team walks out. Ascension vs Luke Harper and Erick Rowan Harper & Rowan vs Uso’s Harper & Rowan vs New Day (as soon as New Day get the upper hand the lights go out and when they turn on you see Braun Strowman holding the referee in the sleeper hold that he does). He then turns on Kofi and puts him in the same hold before Harper superkicks Big E for the win. New Champs: Rowan & Harper. During the prior weeks before the PPV, there is a women’s battle royal to see who will be the number one contender to Charlotte’s title. The winner of this match ends up being Sasha but Paige gets eliminated by an already eliminated Naomi. Paige claims she wouldn’t have lost and it was unfair and is told that if she can beat Naomi in a best 2 of 3 falls over the next three weeks then she will be included in the title match. She loses the first match and wins the next two. The first match sees Sasha helping Naomi and is subsequently banned from the final two matches to make sure they are fair. Naomi attempts to cheat multiple times during the last round but Paige still finds a way to win. The Divas championship match ends up being Paige vs Sasha vs Charlotte. Charlotte comes out to this match with new music that doesn’t have any of her dad’s attachment and doesn’t do any of her father’s patented “Woo”’s. She finally gets to be herself and see how she does on her own. In a true back and forth match Sasha makes Paige tap out to the Bank Statement and wins the Divas title, but upsets Charlotte because she wasn’t even part of the decision. After the match she comes in with a chair or anything really, and attacks Sasha and attacks Paige and sets herself up as a monster heel. Nikki Bella missed the battle royal because of her injury and claims that she deserves a spot in the triple threat match. Big Show tells her that since she didn’t compete in the match she couldn’t vie for the title. But he had another solution, as he felt the battle royal went really well and there are a couple other WOMENS wrestlers that deserve a chance at some glory. Nikki Bella vs Becky Lynch vs Natalya vs Naomi ladder match for the Women’s Championship This title will be much like the Intercontinental title is to the WWE championship. Becky wants to prove to everyone that she wasn’t an afterthought as her PCB members are in the main title picture. Natalya provides some prestige if she wins the title. Naomi previously feuded with Paige and this gives her the ability to have some notoriety going into the match. Nikki has the longest title reign and claims her injury is what really set her back. I could be convinced to have this match end any way. I would say to have Becky win so you can have her and Charlotte feud after Charlotte’s loss and she isn’t happy for Becky and belittles the Women’s title. During the match Charlotte is sitting at commentary with her Divas title and is basically laughing at the contestants saying they are inferior to her and she finds it funny they think the title means something. The buildup week 1 starts off with Sandow, Axel, Slater, Ryder and Rose in the ring. They are talking about how they get no respect. That they have all won their fair share of matches and some were big names in NXT to become nothing here. They say that those who insult them and embarrass them will learn that they deserve respect and deserve opportunities to become mega stars. They begin attacking corporate figures (not named at first so just generic writers or executives. Later they take out people like Dunn and potentially Vince). HHH and Stephanie are busy with other things (you will see later) so a few individuals decide to take it upon themselves to fix the problem. Ryback and Mark Henry start trying to intimidate the five members. They end up getting ganged up on behind the stage and are beaten down over the weeks. The 5 guys will have some name created to represent themselves (something along the lines of the Misfit Alliances or something of that nature). They are really generating heat as they do things like cut off promos before they are done. Cut the lights off in the arena, take out officials during matches they aren’t involved in. Basically whatever they can do to upset the order. Goldust, R-Truth and Bo Dallas are all brought in to help neutralize the problem. This ends up in multiple backstage brawls and multiple street interactions. They fight around the cities they are in and in the garage, etc. Finally, they get a street fight for the PPV which is going to be located in a parking garage, very similar to Eddie vs Cena back in the day. The match ends up being very violet with lots of spots. The fighters get the correct feeling of the match and it truly feels like they all hate each other and are brawling as opposed to wrestling. Everyone gets knocked out at different spots and it comes down to Sandow and Ryback fighting on top of a van. Ryback meathooks Sandow on-top of the van which causes it to cave in and knocks out both guys. All 10 men are left lying around and they call the match off and bring in a handful of ambulances and paramedics. Having recently lost the title, Sheamus can’t believe what has happened to him and doesn’t know what to turn to. He talks to HHH and he says that the Authority is going to make sure that the next match will end with Sheamus regaining his championship. He says that Reigns and Sheamus will pick a wrestler to compete for them in a match and the person who picked the winning wrestler will get to pick the stipulation for their title match. Reigns is going around trying to find someone to fight for him and many of the wrestlers say they won’t because they are worried about the Authority coming down on them. The day comes for the match and Sheamus is waiting by the ring and his fighter comes out (Alberto Del Rio) and Reigns comes out. Sheamus laughs at him saying if he doesn’t have a fighter then he automatically loses. Reigns says he found a fighter and the lights go out and red lights pop up and a heartbeat sound starts. Finn Balor comes out to represent Reigns. Balor ends up beating Sheamus and Reigns says he wants the match to be a falls count anywhere match. Later HHH says he has to honor the agreement but that he is allowed to add rules to the match as well, and that the match will be a triple threat match with Rusev entering the match. On match day, a very violent match ends up with the announcer’s tables smashed and multiple tables destroyed. In the back near the entrance ramp, Sheamus hits Reigns with a Brogue Kick and then as he is laying down to go for the pin Rusev superkicks him and puts the Accolade on him. While he is applying the Accolade for a minute or two, Reigns gets back up and spears Rusev off the ramp onto a table and pins him to retain his title. Now Del Rio is furious about his loss to Balor and says that Balor had time to prepare for the match and get ready. (this is a week before) At the beginning of the week there was a Fatal Four Way to see who would be the number 1 contender for the US championship (it was the Monday of finding out the Number 1 contenders) The match saw Swagger, Neville, Breeze and Miz fighting, with Neville picking up the victory pinning Swagger. (the following that lost are told they will have a match at the PPV that will be a triple threat match for the number 1 contender spot following the PPV, which Miz wins and says that Neville has to win the title so they can keep it in house (Miz then mutters about how he knows Neville will beat him if he wins the title off Del Rio). So Del Rio says he wants a piece of Balor and tells Big Show he needs to make it happen. Big Show says that Neville earned his spot. He tells Balor that if Neville will accept the match, they can have a match at the beginning of the PPV to see who gets the title shot at Del Rio later in the night. Neville doesn’t want to but Miz convinces him that the people want a fighter, they want someone who never backs down and accepts challenges from everyone. Neville accepts. During the match Miz interferes (making it seem like an accident) and costs Neville the match. Balor fights Del Rio and straight up is victorious and leaves with the US championship. Ambrose wins the title and Owens does his destruction thing against Ziggler and Ambrose. This is one I wouldn’t touch too much because I think it has potential. Owens doesn’t care about either of them and then when Ziggler tries to help Ambrose, he looks down on him like “dude I don’t need your help” so both are undervaluing Ziggler. In a good back and forth match Ambrose ends up retaining so he doesn’t just win and lose the title right away. Meanwhile, during the week there is a huge war between Paul Heyman and Bray Wyatt (as Wyatt has destroyed all of Heyman’s ECW guys). Heyman brings Lesnar in and says that Wyatt will be destroyed and taken to Suplex City at the PPV. Wyatt says that any City he goes to he conquers and destroys. He says that he wants to build a dynasty, a true WWE power that will absolve it of all its recent difficulties. He says men like Lesnar, Reigns, Ambrose (guys he just feuded with) they will be the reason for the fall. He says he will send his family out and have them make sure their impact is felt on that PPV night. (as evident with Rowan and Harper winning the tag titles). Wyatt faces off against Lesnar in a steel cage match. Throughout the match both are trading high offensive moves, it is not a typical Lesnar squash match. It appears at one point that Lesnar has the upper hand but the lights go out and the Wyatt images show up. The lights cut back on and on the top of the ramp is a rocking chair with a woman’s fully cloaked figure rocking back and forth. Lesnar is distracted by the woman and she raises her hands and as she does Bray does the back bridge thing and walks towards Lesnar. He then hops up and performs a Sister Abigail, to which she motions to keep doing them until he has done 4 total. He then pins Lesnar and walks out of the ring. Following the Balor victory, the lights go out and you hear/see the Wyatt interference and then see a rocking chair rocking back and forth in the middle of the ring beside Balor (and Del Rio’s body is removed). What does this do? Bray is chasing after Balor for his title. A very meaningful feud for both. Ambrose/Owens/Ziggler can challenge each other for the title during the coming weeks and actually have it switch hands before PPV’s. Breeze can be added, as can Del Rio. Charlotte is becoming self-centered and isn’t happy for Becky because she lost her title. She thinks her title actually means something whereas Becky’s title is a glorified second place. She refuses to help Becky and builds up a feud between them. Naomi has been built up and can feud against a face (possibly Natalya) and Paige can try to avenge her loss and take the Divas title from Sasha (Nikki also can still say she never would have lost the title if not for her injury) The 5v5 match gives those characters some level of relevance while not making them vie for titles. You can have multiple spots and this will be used mostly for strong promos to continue to build their characters to push them in singles or tag teams later in their career or even in the year. Neville will cost Miz his US championship opportunity and the two of them can feud as mentor/mentee. The tag division will have multiple defenses (possibly a defense a week) and have the title move around a lot. In the end it will be with the Wyatt’s the most, but as there are more competitors that can influence the outcome, it should be one that any given day it can be flip flopped. (IT IS OKAY TO MOVE TITLES AROUND…. LOOK AT THE DUDLEYZ, HARDY BOYS AND EDGE&CHRISTIAN AND HOW OFTEN THOSE MOVED) Sheamus has a thing against the Authority. He doesn’t know if he is supposed to trust them now that Rusev attacked him. They try to say that Rusev went rogue because he had a chance at gold but Sheamus doesn’t fully believe them. Reigns feuds against a returning Cena and/or possibly a returning Orton. ( I would also be open to possibly a Samoa Joe bumping up but that would need more fine tuning and planning as his character hasn’t been established on the WWE level).
